Video of people visiting stands at PhotoWe’re coming up on the spring season, a time when the trade-show circuit begins in earnest. All participants should start working those connections as soon as they have a confirmed date for an upcoming marketing event. To get those creative juices flowing, here are a few tips for your 2014 trade-show marketing plans.

Be creative with your trade show display and don’t be afraid to show your personality. Make this the year in which you aim to forge 10 new connections. That may seem like a goal that’s a little out of reach, but once you get into the swing of hobnobbing in-between those presentations you won’t find it very difficult.

While other exhibitors may have over-the-top displays, even a modest trade show exhibit can yield lots of new connections. The secret is to be friendly! Don’t stand behind your booth. Position yourself to the side and nearby a fresh supply of your company brochures. Flash a genuine smile and engage walk-by traffic with the offer of a handshake and a short introduction.

Once you strike up a conversation, invite the other person to take a seat in your booth. Participants are often tired from a long flight or drive. Your prospect will appreciate a break from hours of standing and handing out literature.

Go easy on the marketing pitch. Instead, strike up a pleasant conversation and be sure to ask the other person about their business. Who knows? You might find one conversation turns into a long-term business relationship!
